Structure and the Subjective: Network Metrics and the Experience of Self and Group

A preliminary sketch: Our study takes as its central concern the nature of the relationship between the formal aspects of social structure – network measures – and subjective experiences. In this presentation, we attempt to lay the groundwork for a model that assesses the relationship between an individual’s sense of belonging and centrality within a network using multi-level data that incorporate individual-level characteristics, network positions, group-level characteristics, and organization-level measures. We leverage a unique dataset (24,191 students located in 56 schools) that allows for both an in-depth analysis of individual and group network structure alongside subjective experience. Through a data-driven approach, we explore what trade-offs/value-add machine learning methods offer compared to traditional statistical methods. Specifically, we want to figure out how each method considers the consistency of factors associated with a student’s embedded position between schools.
